Ziva Dynamics has licensed its virtual human and character platform to Academy Award winning visual effects company, Double Negative (Dneg). Dneg has committed to a company-wide adoption of Ziva’s groundbreaking character creation and physical simulation technologies.

Dneg is considered one of the world’s premier visual effects companies and has received numerous Academy Awards recognizing its leadership and innovation in the field.

“We found Ziva to be an intuitive, powerful and fast off-the-shelf FEM solver, finely tuned for high-end VFX Creature work. It was clear that the Ziva team had a thorough knowledge of the artistic and technical challenges we face in production,” said Theo Facey, Head of Creature Development at Dneg.

Ziva was co-founded by James Jacobs, who received a SciTech Academy Award in 2013 for the engineering that powered characters in Avatar, The Hobbit, and the Planet of the Apes franchise, among others. Ziva specializes in this field by offering a character development platform that empowers its customers to create lifelike virtual humans, characters, and creatures. Ziva’s technology has been used in major productions such as Ghostbusters, Suicide Squad, Fantastic Beasts, and various other film and interactive titles currently in production.

Ziva’s toolset allows users to efficiently create highly realistic characters using proprietary virtual anatomy and biophysics. The life-like assets can then be deployed into film, television, video game, and VR/AR environments through a combination of design tools, machine learning, and real-time technologies.

“Dneg has been an integral partner in the development of our software. Their participation in our Beta program has ensured that we push the envelope to create software that is robust and able to support customers producing work at the highest level,” said James Jacobs, co-CEO of Ziva Dynamics, “To see Dneg take this big step forward for their upcoming feature productions validates Ziva’s vision to create the most realistic characters leveraging the powerful combination of real world anatomy and physics.”

Dneg, who recently enjoyed the massive success of Dunkirk’s opening weekend [$50.5M domestic box office], has also contributed to the Dunkirk VR experience, available across a wide range of devices. Dneg expects to leverage the transmedia capabilities of Ziva’s technology platform for future productions. This will allow characters created for films to more easily be used across other media formats.

Graham Jack, CTO of Dneg, added, ”As we continue to scale our business to meet the ever-evolving needs of global entertainment franchises, solutions like Ziva are a natural fit. We believe that using Ziva’s platform for film-quality character simulation will support our commitment to delivering the highest quality work for our clients.”
